The Efficacy of Ultrasound Guided Modified Seldinger Technique in the Application of Peripherally Inserted Central Venous Catheter

Abstract

Objective:To identify the efficacy of ultrasound guided modified Seldinger technique(MST) assisted peripherally inserted central venous catheters(PICC),thus to provide correct methods of using ultrasound guided MST for PICC.Methods:A nonrandomized controlled trial was conducted during March to November 2011 in our hospital.435 patients were divided into two groups.The experiment group included 150 patients who received ultrasound guided MST for PICC,while the control group(n =285) accepted the routine PICC.Results:The incidence of complication of PICC in the experiment group was significantly lower than that of control group(P0.05 ).The indwelling time of PICC of experiment group was significantly longer than that of control group(P0.05 ).No significant difference was observed of the amount of bleeding and causes of pulling catheter between these two group(P0.05 ).Conclusion:The ultrasound guided MST assisted PICC can reduce the incidence of catheter complication,prolong the indwelling time of PICC catheter as well as reduce the risk of PICC utilization and is worthy to be popularized in clinical practice.
