Abstract

Objective:To investigate whether sodium butyrate induces apoptosis of HT-29 cells in vitro. Methods:Flow cytometry, DNA electrophoresis and transmission electron microscopy were used to determine whether the floating cells caused by sodium butyrate undergoes apoptosis. Results:Sodium butyrate induced apoptosis of HT-29 cells in a time-and dose-dependent manner. After treatment with lmmol/L?3mmol/L?5mmol/L sodium butyrate for 48h,the proportion of apoptic cells reached 5 7%?7 8%?12 1% compared with 2 8% in the control group( P 0 05),Conclusion:Sodium butyrate can induces apoptosis of HT-29 cells. This may be relevant to the protective effect of sodium butyrate ag ainst colorectal cancer.
