Value of Complete Blood Count Parameters in Screening Thalassemia Trait

Abstract

Objective:To study the value of complete blood count (CBC) parameters for screening thalassemia trait.Methods:CBC parameters of 61 subjects of β thalassemia trait,36 subjects of α thalassemia trait and 61 healthy subjects were studied.Results:The sensitivity of single test of mean corpuscular volume(MCV),mean corpuscular hemoglobin(MCH),MCV/RBC were as follow:for α thalassemia trait,61.11%,61.11%,63.89%,for β thalassemia trait,98.36%,98.36%,100.00%.The sensitivity of parallel combined test of MCV and MCV/RBC or MCH and MCV/RBC or MCV and MCH or MCV,MCH and MCV/RBC were as follow:for α thalassemia trait,72.22%,69.44%,66.67%,72.22%,for β thalassemia trait,100.00%,100.00%,100.00%,100.00%.Conclusion:MCV/RBC is a valuable parameter to screen thalassemia trait as it has high sensitivity.The sensitivity will be higher when it combines with MCV as a parallel combined test.
