Values of RBC/MCV to preliminary screening diagnosis of thalassemia

Abstract

Objective To study the application values of RBC/MCV to preliminary screening diagnosis of thalassemia.Methods Routine hematological examination was performed with full automatic hemocyte analyzer in 122 thalassemia patients and 41 non-thalassemia patients and 100 control group.The results in different groups were analyzed with RBC/MCV.Results The red blood cell count was higher in thalassemia patients than that in control(P0.05),lower in iron deficiency anemia group than that in control(P0.05).The RBC/MCV in the thalassemia group showed statistic difference(P0.05) compared to that in control group and in the iron deficiency anemia group.The sensitivity and specificity of RBC/MCV ratio were 95.1% and 92.0%,respectively.Conclusion The RBC/MCV ratio has credible value to preliminary screening diagnosis of thalassemia.
