HIV/AIDS awareness and related factors among MSM in Anhui Province,China

Objective To identify the AIDS awareness rate and related factors among men who have sex with men(MSM) in Anhui Province,China. Methods AIDS awareness rate was calculated using Anhui Province data in the national MSM survey organized by the National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention in 61 cities in 2008-2009,χ2 test and multivariate Logistic regression analysis were conducted to identify related factors of AIDS awareness.Results Among the 1 513 MSM participants in the database,the awareness rates of the 8 basic AIDS questions were between 62.9%～93.4%;1 320 answered 6 and more questions correctly,with the awareness rate of 87.2%(95% CI:85.6%～88.9%).Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that the following variables were related to AIDS awareness: city(ORWuhu vs Hefei=0.36,P0.001),education(ORhigh vs middle and less=3.13,P0.001,ORcollege vs middle and less=9.26,P0.001),place to seek sexual partners(all OR of other places vs Internet 1,P0.01),whether receiving IEC materials(OR=2.05,P0.001),whether receiving HIV testing(OR=1.67,P=0.015).Conclusions This study showed that among MSM in Anhui Province, the overall AIDS awareness rate was high,and the knowledge about some basic points was relatively low;there were many related factors of AIDS awareness.The results underscore that the AIDS education activities should be designed according to the characteristics of MSM individuals and groups.
