Abstract
Objective: To investigate the expression of CD44v6 in gastric cancer and to evaluate its prognostic value. Methods:The expression of CD44v6 was analyzed immunohistochemically in gastric cancer by using monoclonal antibody. We investigated the relationship between CD44v6 expression and prognosis in 113 patients with gastric cancer. (Results):CD44v6 expressed in the membrane of cancer cells in 16.7% (5/30) of EGC,25% (4/16) of MGC,and 49.3% (33/67) of AGC(P0.01). CD44v6 was detected in 48.3% (28/58) of patients with lymph node metastasis(Mets) and in 71.4% (5/7) of those with liver metastasis, while only in 19.6% (9/46) of those without any metastasis(P(0.05)). Significantly more cases of intestinal-type gastric cancer had theexpression of CD44v6thandiffuse-typecases(P(0.01)).Conclusion:CD44v6 protein may play an important role in progression and metastatic potential of gastric cancer, and may be a biologic marker of gastric cancer.
