Abstract

Objective To investigate cerebrospinal fluid and serum S-100B protein levels in children with viral encephalitis and to discuss their values in assessing brain injury. Methods 56 children with viral meningitis were divided into two groups according to the severity of disease:coma group (16 cases) and non-coma group (40 cases).CSF and serum S-100B protein of 56 children with viral encephalitis and 16 controls was measured dynamically by ELISA method. Results (1) CSF and serum S-100B level of coma group were higher than those in non-coma group and control group;similarly,non-coma group higher than control group.(2) CSF and serum S-100B level was correlated with the severity of viral encephalitis. Conclusion CSF and serum S-100B could be regarded as a marker of brain injury in children with encephalitis and S-100B level may be helpful in identifying brain injury severity.
