Abstract

Objective To study the expression and correlation between intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in human glioma. Methods The expression of ICAM-1 and MMP-9 in 82 samples of glioma was detected immunohistochemically. Results The expression of ICAM-1 in all of the 82 samples was positive, and the positive rate was 100%. The expression of MMP-9 in the 72 samples of glioma was positive, and the positive rate was 87.80%. In the control group consisting of 11 samples of brain tissue of cerebral trauma after decompressive surgery, there was no ICAM-1 and MMP-9 expression. The positive level of high-grade malignant glioma is higher than that of low-grade malignant glioma (P0.01). There was correlation in the expression between ICAM-1 and MMP-9 (r=0.436). Conclusion ICAM-1 and MMP-9 may play a synergistic role in the occurrence, development and malignance in glioma. Hence, it is a better way to estimate and judge the malignant biological behavior of glioma by combined detection of ICAM-1 and MMP-9.
