Abstract
Objective To investigate the safety and effect of topical anesthesia in cataract extraction and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Methods 142 cases (142 eyes) who received modern extracapsular cataract extraction and IOL implantation on topical anesthesia were observed, the surgical effect and complications were recorded. Results Most of the patients could cooperate during surgery and the operations were finished between 8-14 min. 1 and 3 days after surgery, the corrected vision were equal or better than 0.5 in 83.80% and 94.37% patients respectively. Conclusion Topical anesthesia is adapt to extracapsular cataract extraction and IOL implantation, it is not only avoids the complications resulted from retrobublar or periocular anesthesia, but also makes the surgery more simple and safe.
