Studies on classification of pomegranate cultivars by RAPD analysis

Abstract
RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) analysis was applied to 55 pomagranate cultivars by using 15 random primers and a total of 125 bands were generated, of which 92 were polymorphic bands (the percentage of polymophic loci,PPB=73.6%).The results revealed that there was variance in the 55 cultivars. According to the results of RAPD amplification, which were analyzed to Nei’s genetic distance by TFPGA software, the clustering dendrogram was constructed by UPGMA method. These 55 cultivars were classified into 4 major groups. At the same time, the genetic relationships between the 55 cultivars were also revealed. The results of RAPD had some differences with morphological classification. The results do not support the morphological classification based on the flower color and fruit taste but have relevance to that of the flower petal.
