Methods Students aged 8-10 years old were selected randomly from primary schools in the counties of Yanliang, Gaoling, Baqiao, Weiyang and Hu. The thyroid goiter rate, urinary iodine concentration, iodine concentration in salt and in drinking water was measured and health education was carried out. IDD in the women of child-bearing age was monitored. Results The goiter rate of children aged 8-10 years old was 6.7%. Consuming rate of qualified iodized salt was 87.8%. The median of urinary iodine and iodine concentration in the drinking water was 243.2μg/L and 8.27/μg/L respectively. Conclusions The comprehensive preventive and curative policy for IDD had gotten significant effects by adding iodine in salt in Xi'an.
