abstractbjective] To explore the effects of Ganzhifu decoction in the treatment of experimental fatty liver induced by high fat feeding in rats. [Methods]The fatty liver model was established by feeding with high caloric laboratory chaw for 12 weeks, then the model rats were randomly divided into five groups: model group, three Ganzhifu groups treated with Ganzhifu decoction in different concentrations and dietary treatment group. Meanwhile a normal control group was designed. The rats in the three Ganzhifu groups were treated by Ganzhifu decoction while other groups were given saline of the same volume. The model control group was fed with high caloric laboratory chaw while other groups were fed with normal diet. Four weeks later, all animals were killed. Liver index (liver/body weight ratio) , serum activities of liver-associated enzymes, blood lipid, liver triglyceride, the content of MDA in serum and liver, and pathological histology of all groups were assayed. [Results]Body weight, liver index, activities of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) , aspartate aminotransferase (AST) , alkaline phosphatase (ALP) , gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) , total cholesterol (TC) , triglyceride (TG) , the content of MDA in liver as well as triglyceride in serum and liver of the model group increased significantly, while HDL-cholesterol concentrations decreased significantly. Liver histology expressed moderate to severe steatosis, which was mainly macrovascular steatosis, lobular inflammation, cell infiltration and necrosis. Compared with the model group, the levels of body weight, liver index, serum ALT, ALP, TC, TG, MDA and liver triglyceride, MDA of the Ganzhifu groups were significantly reduced and were close to normal group, while HDL-cholesterol concentrations increased significantly. Meanwhile liver histology was close to normal. In the dietary treatment group, hyperlipidemia persisted, although liver index, GGT decreased and liver histology somewhat improved. [Conclusion] Ganzhifu decoction is effective in the treatment of fatty liver rats induced by high fat feeding.
