Survey on Demand for Health Education for Cancer Prevention and Treatment Among Residents in Sheyang County

[Purpose]To investigate the awareness of cancer prevention knowledge and needs for health education among Sheyang County residents.[Methods] A standard questionnaire survey,including previous sources of cancer prevention knowledge,previous awareness of knowledge about important cancer risk factors and main early cancer symptoms,the preventable and curable character of cancer,and needs on cancer knowledge,was conducted among 2 296 residents by stratified random sampling from all Sheyang County residents aged from 20 to 69.[Results] Television and radio were thought to be the best source to receive knowledge about cancer prevention,70% of residents realized the importance and the effect of cancer prevention;but most of them had little awareness of life style to be a main risk factor of cancer,only 45.27% and 16.30% residents knew improper diet and obesity to be important risk factors of cancer.There was 83.08% residents want to know the knowledge about cancer prevention,63.35% of them want to know the early symptoms of cancer.[Conclusions] Knowledge for prevention and early detection of cancer should be acting as the main publicizing content,through full using of the most important media,television and radio,to improve the ability of prevention and early detection of cancer in Sheyang County residents.
