Abstract
In the existing teaching system, phonetic teaching, i.e. the teaching of initials, finals and tones, is included only at the beginners' level, and then the teaching focus switches to vocabulary, grammar and texts. Phonetic teaching often stops at the pronunciation of characters. Students encounter pronunciation and intonation problems at the text level for lack of reading-aloud teaching which lays the foundation for good pronunciation. This article discusses the necessity of reading-aloud teaching in light of these problems and explores relative teaching strategies.
