Abstract
Chen Shou-qi is the first famous sinologist who was from Fujian Province in Qing Dynasty. As a sinologist who lived in the first half of the nineteenth century,Chen is a transitional scholar. On the one hand,he insisted on the classical research methods. On the other hand,he also took note of the problems of the country and reflected the shortcomings of his school. Then he came back to the Neo-Confucianism,and marked the spirit of making study serve practical purposes. His early classical literary theory was changed toLi Chengand usefulness and he made a compromise between the Han Learning and the Song Learning. This is Chen Shou-qi’s idiographic literary theory that is different from the classical prose writers.
