Therapeutic value of trimetazidine in patients with hypertensive heart disease

Objective To study the effects of trimetazidine on the left ventricular function of patients with hypertensive heart disease (HHD).Methods A total of 63 patients with HHD were enrolled in this study.They were randomly assigned to either conventional treatment group (control group) or trimetazidine in addition to conventional treatment group(trimetazidine group).Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and left ventricular mass index (LVMI) were determined by echocardiography at baseline and 6,12,and 18 months after treatment.Results Compared with baseline,LVEF in trimetazidine group increased significantly at 6-,12-and 18-month (P0.05).The increment of LVEF in trimetazidine group was significant higher than that in control group at 12-and 18-month (P0.01).Compared with baseline,LVMI had no changes in control group but decreased in trimetazidine group at 6-,12-and 18-month,and the difference of LVMI between the two groups was significant only at 18-month (P0.05).Conclusions Trimetazidine in addition to conventional therapy was associated with a significant improvement of left ventricular function and the reversal of left ventricular hypertrophy.
