Abstract

Objective To compare the curative effects and side effects of aripiprazole and clozapine in treatment of patients with schizophrenia. Methods 60 schizophrenics were randomly divided into aripiprazole(n=30)and clozapine(n=30) groups. The clinical therapeutic effectiveness and side effects were assessed with the Positive And Negative Symptom Scale(PANSS)and Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale(TESS) before and at the ends of the 2nd,4th and 6th week of treatment, respectively. Results There was no significant difference in the curative effects between aripiprazole and clozapine(P0.05).The side effects such as somnolence, salivation and weight gain in the aripiprazole group were much lower than those in the clozepine group(P0.01).Conclusion The efficacy of aripiprazole in the treatment of schizophrenia is similar to that of clozapine with fewer side effects and higher safety.
