Abstract

Purpose:To detect the expression of TGFβ 1 and αSMA in renal pelvis of hydronephrosis and to investigate the protective role of TGFβ 1 in the pathophysiologic course of hydronephrosis. Methods:The expression of TGFβ 1 and αSMA protein was determined in 30 renal pelvis specimens with hydronephrosis and 5 normal control specimens by immunohistochemistry. Results:The expression of TGFβ 1 and αSMA are obviously increased in muscle layer of hydronephrotic renal pelvis compared to the normal renal pelvis specimens, P 0.01 , and TGFβ 1 statistically correlates positively to αSMA, r= 0.71 ,P 0.05 . Conclusions:TGFβ 1 may be one of the protective factors in the pathophysiologic course of hydronephrosis by inducing muscle hypertrophy of renal pelvis.
