Abstract

Objective To explore a new method of follicular unit grafting for treatment of cicatricial alopecia caused by various factors. Methods Areas of healthy scalp with bushy hair were selected as the donor site. The whole strip of scalp tissue was taken and divided into follicular units, which were then transplanted into the made-up corresponding pores. From Feb.2003 to Dec.2005,71 cicatricial alopecia patients were treated with this method of follicular unit grafting.Among them,52 cases were cured with a one stage operation, and 19 cases were cured with a 2 stage operation. Results Patients were followed 6~12 months. The transplanted hair was natural and intensive, and had good quality. The average hair survival was 90%,and the appearance was satisfactory. Conclusion Use of follicular unit grafting is a good method for treatment of cicatricial alopecia as it has many advantages with little surgical trauma, fast recovery and good quality natural hair growth.
