Abstract
The existing definitions of ontology cannot meet the needs of the present researches and applications and even cumber people to understand ontology correctly.This paper firstly analyzes the distinctions and the relations between traditional ontology and ontology engineering beginning with the origin of ontology;then,proposes a new definition of ontology on the basis of the definitions of ontology presented in literatures for convenience in creating,reusing,and sharing it,and discusses the limitations of the formal definitions of ontology;thirdly,observes ontology in its life cycle from dynamic perspective;Fourth,analyzes the relations between ontology and knowledge base;Finally,sets forth a new classification method of ontology based on the preceding work.
