Peritoneal dialysis for children with acute renal failure following cardiac surgery of congenital heart disease

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect of peritoneal dialysis (PD) for children with a-cute renal failure following cardiac surgery of congenital heart disease. Methods Retrospective data from 36 children with ARF following cardiac surgery undergoing PD were analyzed.Results The motality (12.5% ) in palien ts with only ARF was significantly lower than those that (45% ) associated with other failing organs (P 0.05) .Renal function recovered within 3 to 30 days after PD, blood potassium declined to normai within 1-2 days, bicarbonate ion declined to normai within 2-5 days, BUN and Cr declined by 49.2% and 42.6% respectively within 4-6 days after PD.Conclusion PD has a good therapeulic effect on ARF following cardiac surgery of children with congenital heart disease.
