Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the use of antibiotics in our hospital for reference of clinical rational use of antibiotics. METHODS: A total of 2,130 cases histories of patients who had been discharged from hospital from Nov. 2006 to Nov. 2007 were analyzed statistically in respect of the use of antibiotics using questionnaire. RESULTS: The percentage of antibiotic use was 63.28%. The percentages of antibiotics used in single kind or in two or three kinds concomitantly were 81.56%, 31.69%, and 5.25% respectively. The prophylactic use and the empirical use of antibiotics accounted for 69.76% and 94.31%, respectively. Leading the list in respect of DDDs were cephalosporines, followed by fluroqunlones, with the new and expensive antibiotics showing the highest percentage. The chief problems lie in the use of antibiotics were as follows: the indications for antibiotic use were too broad; prophylactic use of antibiotics was far from standard; the proportions of empiric use of antibiotics and the use of high-grade antibiotics were great, and rate of etiologic test was low. CONCLUSION: The use of antibiotics in our hospital was on the high side, and a high percentage of irrational use can still be seen.
