Abstract
The difference in interpreting weiyandayi is caused by the two different interpretations of the word wei,one as jingwei(delicate),the other as hanxu(implicit).Through historical investigation, this paper holds that the weiyan in weiyandayi could be interpreted as two structures: one as a verb phrase meaning speak obscurely and implicitly and the other as a noun phrase meaning an obscure, implicit utterance.
