Abstract

High molecular weight sodium polyacrylate was synthesized by inverse emulsion polymerization with acryloyl Span-80 as emulsifying agent. The effect of emulsifying agent and neutralisation level on the stability of the polymeric system was investigated. The effect of initiator dosage and monomer concentration on the performance of the products were also studied. It is shown that the optimal experimental conditions are neutralisation level 90 %, emulsifying agent usage level 3 %(oil system); initiator concentration (NH_ 4)_ 2S_ 2O_ 8 0.06%, NaHSO_ 3 0.04 %, DMAEMA 0.02 %(monomer weight); monomer concentration, 40 %(water system), respectively. The molecular weight of the synthesized title product at the optimal experimental conditions is greater than 2.6×10 7. The solubility of the product is better than that synthesized by conventional solution polymerization.
