Abstract
Objective:To investigate the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and its clinical significance in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Methods:Two-step immunohistochemical method was used to examine the expression and location of MMP-9 in the tissue of 40 cases laryngeal cancer and their surrounding normal mucosa. Results:It was found that the positive rate of MMP-9 in 40 laryngeal cancer tissues was 90.0%(36/40),the difference of the expression of MMP-9 in tumor tissue and normal mucosa beside the tumor was significant(P0.01).The positive rate in those carcinoma with cervical lymph node metastasis was much higher than that in cases without cervical lymph node metastasis(P0.01).The positive rate in the clinical stage Ⅲ~Ⅳ of these patients was higher than the clinical stageⅠ~Ⅱ(P0.01). MMP-9 was immunolocalized on the membrane and intracytoplasm of metastatic cluster tumor cells or the tumor cells adjacent to the basement membrane. Conclusion:The results showed that the expression of MMP-9 has relationship to invasion and lymph node metastasis of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
