Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of limbal epithelial autograft transplantation combined mitomycin C application in preventing the recurrence of pterygium. Methods After cut of pterygium, the sclera was covered by a tampon with 0.4 mg/mL mitomycin C for 3 minutes and washed by physical solution, then limbal epithelial autograft was transplanted to the area. The follow-up time was 6-22 months. Results For all of the 42 eyes, pterygium recurred in 2 eyes(4.8%).The complications included foreign body sensation, tearing, delayed conjunctival healing, punctate keratitis, and dry eye syndrome. Conclusion Limbal epithelial autograft transplantation combined mitomycin C application can effectively prevent the recurrence of pterygium. It is simple, safe and has lower complications.
