Clinical analysis of different surgical procedures on pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland

OBJECTIVE To compare the complications of two different surgical procedureson pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland.METHODS Sixty nine patients with pleomorphic adenoma of parotid gland were randomly divided into two groups.One group received conventional operations i.e.excision of tumor with parotidectomy,but facial nerves were reserved.Another group received functional parotidectomy,i.e.tumor removal with partial parotidectomy.Patients were followed up 3 months to 8 years.The Frey’s syndrome,salivary fistula,facial nerve paralysis,shape of the face were recorded when follow up.RESULTS In the conventional operation group,the occurrence rates of facial paralysis,Frey syndrome and unsymmetrical face were 26.47 %,58.82 % and 17.64 % respectively,and that in functional parotidectomy group were 8.57 %,25.71 % and 2.8 % respectively.The complications in conventional operation group were much higher than that in functional parotidectomy group(P0.05).CONCLUSION Functional parotidectomy,i.e.tumor removal with partial parotidectomy has less postoperative complications than conventional operation group and it is of valuable in clinical application.
