Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effect of combined therapy on elderly patients with isolated systolic hypertension. Methods Forty-eight patients with isolated systolic hypertension who failed to control blood pressure by taking a single medication were treated with a combined-drug therapy of valsartan 80 mg,once a day at 6 am,and nifedipine 10 mg,once a day before supper.Blood pressure was measured before and one month after the therapy. Results Compared with before the combined treatment, systolic blood pressure after the treatment showed significantly different(t=5.217,P0.01),but no significant difference was noted for diastolic pressure. Conclusion Combined therapy with valsartan and nifedipine is better for aged patients with isolated systolic hypertension, especially for those who failed to control the blood pressure with a single medication.
