Abstract

AIM: To investigate the relation between renal pathological category and clinical features by analyzing the clinicopathological date in 1542 cases having underwent renal biopsy. METHODS: Pathological classifications were made according to the WHO criteria of 1982 for renal pathology or the modified WHO criteria of 1995 and the clinical data, laboratory results, light microscopy, immune fluorescence and electron microscopy by a panel of pathologists and nephrologists in routine clinical-pathological rounds. RESULTS: The average age at renal biopsy was 32.5±15.3 (6-63) years old in 1542 patients with renal diseases, and the ratio of male to female was 1.55∶1. Primary glomerular diseases (PGD) accounted for 69.39%,secondary glomerulonephritis (SGN) for 26.85%,and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) for 2.59%. The PGD in descending order of incidence ,were mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (MsPGN,45.05%),focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS,16.73%) and IgA nephropathy (8.32%). The SGN in descen- ding order of incidence, were lupus nephritis (14.27%),pur- pura nephritis (7.00%) and hepatitis B virus-associated nephritis (HBVGN,1.95%). The chronic renal failure in descending order of incidence, were IgA nephropathy (13.70%),proliferative sclerosing glomerulonephritis (PSGN,10.40%) and FSGS (9.10%). CONCLUSION: In our area, renal diseases often happen in young people. PGD is a dominating type in which MsPGN is the most common. In the SGN,lupus nephritis is dominant. The major pathological categories of the causes of chronic renal failure are IgA nephropathy and PSGN.
