Abstract

As the capital of the modern China, Nanjing had made great achievements in city planning and construction. This paper analyses the impetus and characteristic of the city's transformation, and then classifies the evolution process of city planning of Nanjing into four periods: city transformation period, capital planning period, occupied period and recovering period. And it also summarizes the historical characteristics of the city in terms of the city's capital position, “integration of west and east guidelines and “bureaucracy-centered city planning.
