Abstract
Shanghai, which was once a county seat in China before 1843, was opened to the Western after Opium War. Due to the introduction of city construction applied by Western colonizers, the renovation of the old city was promoted, which accelerated the formation of the early-modem city planning of Shanghai. And thereby Shanghai developed into a big city of the Far East. The early-modern city planning of Shanghai, which is also the epitome of that of China, can be divideded into three main historical phases and 6 sub-phases: from construction of new town to the renovation of the old area, to planning of part of city and planning of the whole city. This process was also the basic characteristic of the essential aspect of the city planning in China.
