Abstract
1-(4-methyl-6-hydroxyl-pyrimidine)-3-(phenyl-azo)-triazene (MHPPAT) as a chromogenic reagent was synthesized and its color reaction with mercury was investigated. In the presence of the surfactant NP and in the Na2B4O7-NaOH medium of pH 10.0, MHPPAT forms a purple complex with Hg(Ⅱ). The apparent molar absorptivity of the complex is 2.88×105 L·mol-1·cm-1 at 520 nm (λmax). The molar ratio of Hg(Ⅱ) to MHPPAT is 1∶4. Beer′s law is well obeyed in the range of 0~4.80×10-4 g/L for mercury. The method has been applied to the direct determination of mercury in waste water with satisfactory results.
