A Study of English Vocabulary with Register Theory as the Basis

Abstract

Register theory is one of the important theories in the field of systematic functional linguistics.Factors that affect the contextual variables include field of discourse,tenor of discourse and mode of discourse.The study of vocabulary is an important aspect of language research and learning.Viewed from these theories and the three contextual variables,the present paper analyzes the restrictive force of register in English vocabulary,especially its roles in distinguishing English synonyms,determining the concrete meaning of the polyseme and the style choice of English vocabulary.At the same time,the paper brings out the implications of register theory on the teaching of English vocabulary.
