Evaluation of IDD prevention by popularizing iodine salt in Fuling County

Objective To investigate effect of iodized salt on Iodine Deficiency Disorders(IDD) prevention,provide basic information for elimination of IDD in Fuling County,Chongqing City in 2010.Methods Collected samples from east,west,south,north and middle five townships,examined goiter of 8 to 10 years old children by palpation,determined urinary iodine of 8 to 10 years old children using Ammonium Persulfate-Arsenic and Cerium Catalysis Spectrophotometry,investigated parts of selected school children about knowledge of IDD prevention by questionnaire.Results From 2006 to 2009,coverage rate of iodine salt was 93.3%~97.5% and the rate of qualified iodine salt ranged from 91.1% to 95.6%,the thyroid total goiter rate has decreased from 14.84% to 5.75% by palpation,the median of urine iodine was 166.1μg/L～207.4 μg/L,awareness rate of the IDD prevention knowledge among the children was 92.4%～91.3%.Conclusions It has remarkable effect on elimination of IDD by taking iodine salt in Fuling County.
