A Semantic Extension Mechanism for the Polysemous Verb 「つける」with View of Cognitive Linguistics

Focusing on the polysemous verb,つける,this paper schematically describes the spatial cognition relationship which each aspect of the meaning items embodies in the context,using the archetype theory of cognitive linguistics and the cognitive models of metaphor and metonymy. It can be seen from the analysis that metaphorical mapping can transmit the reasoning mode of source domains into that target domains. Because the verb,つける,gradually extends large and complex semantic categories under the action of metaphor chains.
