A Cognitive Study on Semantic Extension of Polysemous Words and its Implications for Teaching

Abstract

Basing on prototype theory,this paper analyzes the semantic extension of polysemous words and points out that different senses of a polysemous word are derived from its prototype meaning by means of concatenation and radiation.Metaphor and metonymy are two important cognitive devices in the process of semantic extension.Teachers are advised to apply prototype theory,metaphor and metonymy to the teaching of polysemous words.
