Effects of procyanidin on proliferation and apoptosisof prostate cancer cell line PC-3

Objective:To investigate the effects of procyanidins on proliferation and apoptosis of a hormone-independent prostate cancer cell line PC-3 in vitro.Methods: PC-3 cells were cultured with different concentrations of procyanidin(100,200 and 300μg/ml).After 24,48 and 72 hours the morphological changes of PC-3 cells were observed by HE staining,the inhibition of proliferation was measured by MTT assay,and cell apoptosis was evaluated by flow cytometry. Results: After treatment of procyanidins,partial PC-3 cells presented characteristic morphological changes.Procyanidins inhibited the growth of PC-3 cells in concentration and time-dependent manner.Flow cytometry analysis showed that procyanidins induced apoptosis of PC-3 cells,and the percentage of apoptotic cells increased as the concentration increased and time elapsed.Conclusion: Procyanidins inhibit proliferation of PC-3 cells and promote its apoptosis.
