A Study on Grammatical Metonymy of Body Parts in English

Abstract

Metonymy is a ubiquitous feature of language.Moreover,it is a basic mode of thinking.In terms of the degree of abstractness,metonymy can be classified into high-level metonymy and low-level metonymy,and grammatical metonymy is high-level propositional metonymy.Based on the analysis of high-level metonymy expressed by body parts like ACTION FOR PROCESS and PERCETION FOR EXPERIENTIAL EVENT,the study finds that the basic motivation underlying the metonymies is highlighting the role of the body part,and all the metonymy mappings coincide in locating the body part in a more privileged position than it originally had in the non-metonymic version.
