Study of PCNA and GFAP Expressions in Human Brain Astrocytomas by Double Immunohistochemical Staining

Abstract

Objective To investigate the expressions of proliferating cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in human brain astrocytomas and their relationship with the pathological grades of the tumors. Methods The expressions of PCNA and GFAP were determined by double immunohistochemical staining in 41 sperimens of astrocytomas and their relationship with pathological grades of the tumors was analyzed. Results The positive rates of PCNA and GFAP expressions were both 100% in the astrocytomas. The expression of PCNA was positively related with the degree of astrocytoma malignancy(r=0.627, P0.01). The ex-pression of GFAP was negatively related with the degree of astrocytoma malignancy (r=-0.568, P0.01). There were significant differences in PCNA and GFAP expressions between astrocytomas of grades Ⅰ-Ⅱ and Ⅲ-Ⅳ (P0.05). The expression of PCNA was negatively related with that of GFAP in the astrocytomas (r=-0.332, P0.05). Conclusion The expressions of both PCNA and GFAP are related with the prolife-rative activity and the degree of astrocytoma malignancy.[
