Abstract

Objective To evaluate the influence of metabolic sydrome(MS)on carotid intima-media thickness(IMT)and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV)in patients with essential hypertension(EH).Methods A total of 328 EH patients was divided into MS group(EH+MS,156 cases)and non MS group(172 cases).Body mass index(BMI),waist circumference(WC),systolic blood pressure(SBP),diastolic blood pressure(DBP),fasting blood glucose(FBG),total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),high-dendity lipoprotein(HDL-C),Low-density lipoprotein(LDL),IMT and baPWV were measured and compared between two groups. Results There were no differences between two groups in age, sex, hypertension duration and blood pressure level.BMI,WC,TC,TG and LDL were greater in MS group than those in non MS group(P0.05),while HDL-C was lower and IMT and baPWV were greater in MS group than those in non MS group(P0.01).Age,SBP,FPG and TG were positively correlated with IMT.Age,SBP and FPG were positively correlated with baPWV.Conclusion Metabolic syndrome is associated with carotid intima-media thickness and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity in EH.Correction of metabolic disorders is helpful in preventing and treating atherosclerosis in the patients with EH.
