Abstract

Objective: To study the relationship between metabolic syndrome(MS)and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV). Methods: According to International Diabetes Federation MS definition in 2005,we enrolled 571 subjects in Beijing area including 269 male and 302 female with the mean age of(56.2±9.5)years.The subjects were divided into 4 groups upon MS components.Group1,the patients with 1 metabolic abnormality,n=108,Group2,the patients with 2 metabolic abnormalities,n=154,Group3,the patients with 3 metabolic abnormalities,n=269,and Control group, the subjects without metabolic abnormality,n=40.baPWV was examined by automatic PWV measuring system and the other clinical parameters were analyzed as well. Results: BaPWV was significantly related to age, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol and waist circumference,P0.05 respectively.Stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that age, mean arterial pressure, fasting blood glucose and triglyceride were positivety and independently associated with BaPWV.With the adjusted age and gender,baPWV value in Control group was 13.1 m/s,in Group1 was 14.5 m/s,in Group 2 was 15.1 m/s,and in Group3 was 15.9 m/s,P0.05 respectively. Conclusion: baPWV elevates accordingly with the increased metabolic abnormalities which may imply that more MS components could accelerate the development of arterial stiffness in MS patients.
