Abstract
Objective To investigate the reduced expression and clinical significance of E-cadherin and α-catenin in bladder transitional cell carcinoma. Methods Immunohistochemical method was used to detect E-cadherin and α-catenin in 44 cases of bladder transitional cell carcinoma and 12 cases of nonneoplasms tissue as controls. The results were analyzed with clinical stage, pathological grade, prognosis and reccurrence data. Results Decreased expression of E-cadherin and α-catenin correlated with the clinical stage, pathological grade, prognosis, reccurrence and poor outcome. Conclusions Reduced expression of E-cadherin and α-catenin can indicate the maligmant biological behavior of bladder transitional cell carcinoma, and correlate with invasion and metastasis. To detect the expression of E-cadherin and α-catenin can be helpful in predicting the treatment, prognosis and diagnosis of bladder transitional cell carcinoma.
