Abstract
The laser surface hardening for cutting fibre roller made of 4Cr13 stainless steel was tested by using continuous wave CO 2 laser beam. The microstructure observation and hardness distribution test in the cross section of the hardened layer were carried out.The feasibility of replacing thermal spraying treatment by laser surface hardening was discussed. The results indicate that the hardness and thickness of the hardened layer for cutting fibre roller of 4Cr13 stainless steel come up to or even exceed that of the coatings by thermal spraying treatment. It is practicable to use laser surface hardening process instead of thermal spraying to strengthen the surface of cutting fibre roller of 4Cr13 stainless steel.
