Review of Formal Equivalence Translation Theory in Newmark's Approaches of Translation

The paper analyses the translation theory and two translation approaches--communicative translation and semantic translation--in Newmark's Approaches of Translation. In Newmark's point of view, translation theory stems from translation practice and in turn provides guidance for the practice. A theory should not only emphasize dynamic equivalence, it should also put different texts and corresponding translation standards into consideration. Generally, in literary translation, all kinds of formal factors should be seriously considered, sometimes even the sound effect.
