Study of using root separation skill to preserve severe furcation involvement molars

Objective To observe the clinical effect of single crown,combined crown,bridge restoration on severe furcation involvement molars after using root separation skill.Methods A total of 53 molars with grade Ⅲ or Ⅳ furcation involvement were preserved after proper endodontic and periodontic treatment.The medial and distal roots were separated;one or both roots were kept and the teeth were restored with single crown,combined crown or bridge restoration.Results After 1～5 years follow-up,we found good masticatory function and firm restoration,with the success rate 94.3%.Conclusion Using root separation to keep severe furcation involvement molars,followed by fixed prosthesis,is suitable for molars with severe root bifurcation and periodontal pockets after periodontal treatment.It is an effective way to increase the preservation rate of molars and can reasonably prolong the lifespan of the molar while providing certain degree of masticatory function.
