Abstract
Furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid was synthesized through oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl-furfural by potassium permanganate. The influence of the reaction conditions, such as the sodium hydroxide concentration in the reaction system, the reactant/permanganate ratio, and the reaction time,on the yield of furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, was investigated. The test results showed that the optimal reaction conditions were realized in an acidic condition, when the sodium hydroxide concentration in the reaction system was 2.2 mol/L,the reactant/permanganate ratio was 2.4∶1,and the reaction time was 10 min, with the product yield reaching 76.3%.This method for producing furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid using potassium permanganate can be carried out under mild conditions, without employing an expensive catalyst.
