Treatment of ureteral calculi with Holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy via ureteroscope(a report of 253 cases)

Abstract

[Objective] To explore treatment and clinical effectiveness of holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy via ureteroscope for ureteral calculi.[Methods] The clinical data of 253 cases of ureteral calculi with holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy under ureteroscope were analyzed.[Results] 246 cases were successful with a rate of 97.23%(246/253),in which lower ureteral calculi were 98.52%(133/135),middle ureteral calculi 96.91%(94/97),upper ureteral calculi 90.47%(19/21).3 cases with serious ureteral stricture and 2 cases with serious ureteral perforation were diverted to open operation.The upper ureteral calculi of 2 cases transferred onto the kidney.Leaved double J tube before extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy(ESWL).After 4 to 6 weeks of follow-up,the calculi free rate of lower ureteral calculi was 97.03%,middle ureteral calculi was 93.81%,upper ureteral calculi 80.95%.[Conclusion] Treatment of reteral calculi with this method has advantages of less invasion and pain,higher effectiveness,safety,fast recovery.It is a good treatment for ureteral calculi,especially for middle and lower ureteral calculi.
