Abstract

Euphemism is important to harmonize interpersonal relations.Due to the cultural differences,Chinese euphemism is different from that of English,but they are almost identical in pragmatic functions.In this paper,the constituent ways of euphemism and principles of its use are talked about.At the same time,based on the speaker's motivation,five pragmatic functions are discussed: taboo,avoiding vulgarity,concealing,beautification and humor.
