Flurbiprofen mixed with propofol in prevention of propofol injection pain

Objective To observe the preventive effects of flurbiprofen mixed with propofol against propofol injection pain.Methods Two hundred ASA Ⅰ-Ⅱ patients scheduled for general anesthesia were divided into four groups randomly (n=50 each):group A was intravenously given propofol (2 mg/kg) mixed with flurbiprofen (1 mg/kg) for induction of general anesthesia;group B was intravenously given flurbiprofen (1 mg/kg) prior to the administration of propofol (2 mg/kg);group C was intravenously given propofol (2 mg/kg) mixed with 0.5% lidocaine (0.1 mL/kg);and group D was intravenously given propofol (2 mg/kg) mixed with saline 0.1 mL/kg.Pain incidences at injection were assessed after starting the propofol infusion when the speed of injection was maintained constantly at 0.5 mL/s.Results The incidences of pain-free in group A,group B and group C were significantly higher than that in group D (P0.01),and the incidences of moderate and severe pain were significantly lower than that in the group D (P0.01).The incidences of pain-free in group B and group C were significantly lower than that in group A (P0.05,0.01),and the incidence of slight pain was significantly higher than that of group A (P0.05,0.01).The pain incidences were not significantly different between group B and C (P0.05).Conclusion Flurbiprofen can effectively relieve propofol injection pain,and the effect is better when it is mixed with propofol before administration.(Shanghai Med J,2010,33:339-341)
