The correlation of serum VEGF and tissue VEGF in human colorectal carcinoma

Abstract

Purpose Try to find a reliable and atraumatic method to predict the progress and prognosis of human colorectal carcinoma. Methods The vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) ill serum and tissue of 36 cases of colorectal carcinoma was measured by ELISA and immunohistochemistry, while 53 cases healthy volunteers were also measured as control group. The correlatiou of serum VEGF and tissue VEGF was especially analyzed. Results ①The level of serum VEGF in patients with colorectal carcinoma was significantly higher than that of control group((813.14±511.87)μg/Lversus(241.40±164.08)μg/L).②Serum VEGF was not correlated to sex, age, tumor site and histological type.③The level of serum and tissue VEGF was positively correlated to tumor size, lymph-node involvement and liver or distant organs metastasis.④Serum VEGF and tissue VEGF were closely correlative.Conclusions ①Since the level of serum and tissue VEGF was closely correlated with Dukes stage, it could be used as a good parameter to predict development and prognosis of colorectal carcinoma.②Since the level of VEGF between serum and tissue was parallel, so serum VEGF measurement may be the substitution of tissue VEGF.
